McCahon House x Space for Contemporary Art Exchange 2026
Korean artist Syyoung Kim will travel to Aotearoa this August, for the reciprocal McCahon House x Space For Contemporary Art Exchange residency.
Born in 1958, Syyoung Kim first encountered Japanese ceramics and black ink through his father, a calligrapher who had worked in Japan. His fascination with both the science and artistry of ceramics led him to complete two master's degrees at Yonsei University: the first in Metallurgical Engineering and the second in Ceramics through the Graduate School of Industry. He was the recipient of the 2019 Republic of Korea Order of Cultural Merit, Hwagan Medal.
Kim has developed a distinctive practice that combines scientific inquiry with artistic expression. His work explores the transformative qualities of minerals, soils and fire, using ceramic processes to create works that reflect both material experimentation and deep technical knowledge.
During his time in Aotearoa, Syyoung looks forward to connecting with the local ceramics community and spending dedicated studio time at Auckland Studio Potters, where he will further develop his practice while engaging with artists and audiences across Tāmaki Makaurau.
