McCahon House x Space for Contemporary Art Exchange artist Syyoung Kim held a special  demonstration for Auckland Studio Potters members

Korean artist Syyoung Kim has spent the past month in Aotearoa as part of the reciprocal McCahon House x Space for Contemporary Art Exchange Residency.

During his time in Tāmaki Makaurau, Syyoung has been based at Auckland Studio Potters (ASP), where he has had a dedicated pod studio to develop new work and an opportunity to connect with ASP’s members. On Saturday 22 August, ASP hosted a special event for its members, inviting them to observe Syyoung creating a moon jar; a form for which he is widely recognised as a master.

ASP Manager Hayley Bridgford reflected that it has been a privilege to have Syyoung in residence and to witness his joyful and inquisitive approach to ceramics. During the event, Syyoung shared his distinctive methods for creating forms, demonstrating his approach to throwing large vessels on the wheel and his intuitive techniques for joining and building. Maiah Cossill has also worked alongside Syyoung during his residency at ASP, learning and exchanging techniques along the way.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Auckland Studio Potters, Hayley and Maiah for their generous support of Syyoung and for helping to make this such a memorable part of his time in Aotearoa.
