Tanu Gago in conversation with Nigel Borell
Tanu Gago - MNZM (He/Him) is an interdisciplinary artist, queer activist, and filmmaker. He is the 2014 Auckland Festival of Photography Annual Commission recipient and the 2018 Macmillan Brown artist in residence. In 2019 Gago was inducted into the order of merit, with Queen's honors for services to Pacific arts and the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2020 Gago was awarded the Creative New Zealand, Contemporary Pacific Artist award.
Gago works at the intersections of film, digital arts, animation, and interactive technologies, with an interest in building restorative narratives of queer Indigenous Moana experiences. Gago is currently an artist in development with Piki Films and a member of FAFSWAG, a Queer Indigenous arts collective and New Zealand Arts Foundation Arts Laureates. In 2022 FAFSWAG will represent Aotearoa at Documenta Fifteen.

Vic Bidel is from a series entitled Takatāpui: A place of Standing. This was commissioned by the then named New Zealand AIDS Foundation (Burnett Foundation Aotearoa). Shot between 2014 - 2017 the series documented significant community leaders within the Takatāpui community from around Aotearoa, through a series of culturally elevated portraits. A total of 100 images were captured over the span of three years. Prior to 2023, this artwork exclusively existed as a digital artwork. Physical prints have been produced on two occasions for international presentation, at Pingyao Photo Festival in 2017 and at Documenta15 in Kassel, Germany in 2022. Subsequently both editions have been destroyed. This physical reproduction was produced in 2023 for the FAFSWAG 10 year anniversary exhibition entitled ALTERATION, curated by Tanu Gago, Elyssia Wilson Heti and Jaimie Waititi. It is the only remaining physical copy of this work.
