The Gate takes it’s name from Colin McCahon’s 1962 exhibition of The Gate Series paintings, a collection of works that, in McCahon’s words, explored “a way through.

Your support will go towards the Parehuia Artist Residency and associated public engagement and education activity. Parehuia is a purpose-built house and studio which sits next door to the McCahon House Museum. ​

Parehuia has become one of the most esteemed artist residencies in Aotearoa with over 50 residencies awarded since 2006. Support enables artists to fully immerse themselves into developing their practice, often at a transformational point in their careers.

Funds will be dedicated to:

- the Parehuia Artist Residency - one of the most esteemed in Aotearoa New Zealand. Parehuia is designed to enable artists to fully immerse themselves into developing their practice by providing a purpose built house and studio situated next to the McCahon House Museum

- professional development opportunities for resident artists - such as meeting art collectors, developing stronger professional networks, opportunities for public speaking, commissioning of critical writing, and participating in our education programme and digital resources
