A special event with Louie Zalk-Neale (Ngāi Te Rangi), the inaugural artist in our exchange with Space for Contemporary Art, Seoul.

In June, invited patrons, supporters and colleagues joined us for an intimate gathering with Louie Zalk-Neale (Ngāi Te Rangi), the inaugural artist in our exchange with Space for Contemporary Art, Seoul.

The evening opened with a performance by Louie, who transformed the room into a space of quiet attention and reflection. Working with natural materials and weaving practices, Louie invited guests to consider ideas of connection, care, and exchange, themes that resonated throughout the performance and the residency.

Following the performance, Louie shared reflections from their residency in South Korea, which unfolded across Seoul and Jeju Island through artist-to-artist wānanga, cultural exchange, and encounters that revealed unexpected parallels between Aotearoa and the Korean Peninsula. Familiar plants, shared histories, and moments of recognition became guiding tohu (signs) throughout the journey, opening new pathways for research into migration, belonging, and connection across oceans.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Asia New Zealand Foundation for supporting Louie’s residency, as well as our Tomorrow Group patrons and partner Space for Contemporary Art. Special thanks to Ukaipo for generously hosting the event.
